Mediterranean Coral Provinces as a Sponge Diversity Reservoir: Is There a Mediterranean Cold-Water Coral Sponge Fauna?

چکیده
Cold-water coral reefs (CWC) are known to be biodiversity hotspots, however, the sponge assemblages found dwell within these habitats haven not been studied in depth date Mediterranean Sea. The present article provides first insight on associated fauna of recently discovered CWC communities Catalan Margin and, a lesser extent, Cabliers Coral Mound Province, while also reviewing current knowledge dwelling all provinces. In regards areas, some rare species cited for time or redescribed, two them, Hamacantha (Hamacantha) hortae sp. nov. and Spongosorites cabliersi new science. At basin scale, appear as poriferan yet diversity values each site rather represent small fraction its actual fauna. Additionally, existence an endemic exclusively is refuted. Nonetheless, thriving appears unique, different from that other Atlantic regions. Finally, with knowledge, grouped three distinguishable clusters (Alboran Sea, Western Eastern Mediterranean), which determined by basins water circulation, specially Levantine Intermediate Water following western-eastern pattern Strait Gibraltar Adriatic Overall, living still poorly explored most they good candidates biogeographical studies. Coral mucus fuels the sponge loop in warm- and cold-water coral reef ecosystems
Shallow warm-water and deep-sea cold-water corals engineer the coral reef framework and fertilize reef communities by releasing coral mucus, a source of reef dissolved organic matter (DOM). By transforming DOM into particulate detritus, sponges play a key role in transferring the energy and nutrients in DOM to higher trophic levels on Caribbean reefs via the so-called sponge loop. Coral mucus m...
متن کاملOxygen consumption by a coral reef sponge.
Oxygen consumption of the Red Sea coral reef sponge Negombata magnifica was measured using both incubation and steady-state methods. The latter method was found to be the more reliable because sponge activity remained stable over time. Oxygen consumption rate was measured during three levels of sponge activity: full activity, reduced activity and basal activity (starved). It was found that the ...
متن کاملComparing Deep-Sea Fish Fauna between Coral and Non-Coral “Megahabitats” in the Santa Maria di Leuca Cold-Water Coral Province (Mediterranean Sea)
Two experimental longline surveys were carried out in the Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) cold-water coral province (Mediterranean Sea) during May-June and September-October 2010 to investigate the effect of corals on fish assemblages. Two types of "megahabitat" characterized by the virtual absence of fishing were explored. One was characterized by complex topography including mesohabitats with carb...
متن کاملRe-plumbing in a Mediterranean sponge.
Observations are reported for Dysidea avara sponges where once functioning oscula (outlets) are converted through internal re-plumbing into functioning oversized ostia (OSO; inlets). Flow tank studies employed high-speed photography and particle tracking of laser-illuminated 0.5-6.0 microm diameter glass beads to trace particles streaming into OSO. A fluorescein dye/glass bead uptake experiment...
متن کاملPatterns of Chemical Diversity in the Mediterranean Sponge Spongia lamella
The intra-specific diversity in secondary metabolites can provide crucial information for understanding species ecology and evolution but has received limited attention in marine chemical ecology. The complex nature of diversity is partially responsible for the lack of studies, which often target a narrow number of major compounds. Here, we investigated the intra-specific chemical diversity of ...
